That waiting room at the licensing department knows what’s up: spit out numbers until someone is happy with them. You can’t do anything except keep your eyes glued to the screen and move when they call you.
Sports betting works in a similar way to the lottery. Just look past all the stuff you don’t need to see, and you’re left with numbers telling you how much you need to pay. In YesPlay’s sports area, you’ll find everything you need to know to get started. See the Live and Prematch games, the list of sports you can bet on like soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, basketball, and more. You also see a “More markets” button if you want to explore all the other betting options we have on offer.
The price
YesPlay works with decimal odds, which tell you the total return you will receive for each bet, including the money you originally spent on the bet. So, for example, if you bet R29 on something with odds of 2.12, you will get R61.48 back. An easy way to quickly figure out how likely an outcome is would be to assume that odds of 2.00 is a 50% chance, while odds of 4.00 is roughly a 25% chance. You can quickly see if it’s worth taking a shot.
The line
The other number you need to know is the line, usually a total or a handicap. If you’re betting on basketball, you might see totals such as 184.5 and spreads like -13.5, with some markets saying “incl. overtime”. That “incl. overtime” label is important. It means that full-time totals and handicaps can include those extra periods, but quarter or half markets might be treated differently. You’ll have to read the rules for your bet to be sure.
If you’re not sure what to expect, simply read more and see what options are available to you. With Cricket, you can bet on the best prices and if there’s going to be a super over, and with Tennis, you can bet on the winner of the game, total games and game handicap.
